Celebrating Earth Day with These Featured Eco-Friendly Homes

Earth Day, commemorated on April 22 as a global day of observance, has since become the planet’s largest civic event, observed by more than a billion people. Thus, this Luxury Living edition celebrates the 54th Earth Day with a trove of environmentally conscious homes.  Far away from our usual beat of Brentwood, Beverly Hills and Malibu,  but quite interesting.

Minawetu, (“Island Home” in the Algonquin language) is an exuberant, 3.3-acre beachfront compound overlooking Vineyard Sound and the Elizabeth Islands on the North Shore of Martha’s Vineyard. In essence, this contemporary coastal escape is a platform for a botanical garden, which grows on and around the house. Vast walls of glass—and ceilings—visually connect the occupants with the outdoors. Rooftop solar panel “gardens,” waterfalls and ponds, and green technologies further emphasize the biophilic design.  Minawetu is co-listed by Gerret Conover.  (Discover Minawetu here)

True opulence abides in the soaring spaces of this “wild luxury” penthouse in Eywa, a revolutionary, eco-friendly tower overlooking the Dubai Water Canal. Inspired by nature, the building’s design evokes the sheltering banyan tree of life, with open, circular columns emulating the sacred tree’s organic weave of branches and interlacing roots. Its Earth-friendly credentials include LEED Platinum, WELL Platinum, and HealthTechPro certifications. (Discover Eywa Here)

Paradise awaits at Casa Maracuya in La Ecovilla, a pioneering eco-resort and wildlife sanctuary featured in the Netflix documentary series Down to Earth. Built into the jungle canopy in the mountains of Costa Rica’s Alajuela Province, this environmentally friendly rainforest retreat includes six fully furnished villas, an infinity pool, and tropical gardens backing onto the mystical Machuca River. Currently operated as a boutique guest house, but ideal for a private compound, the property offers luxurious, self-contained accommodations for 32 guests.  (Discover Casa Maracuya Here)

This tropical villa is perched high in the hills of Redrock, a gated community on the Peterborg Peninsula of St. Thomas, USVI. The residence spans 2,500 square feet across three levels, with five bedrooms and three bathrooms. The upper-floor great room has dark wood floors under a white cathedral ceiling, and picture windows to frame the views of sea and sky. The lower level leads out to lush gardens and a beautiful sea-view infinity pool. Green technologies include solar power and an EV-charging station.(Discover this Tropical Villa Here)

Andalusia’s Benahavís Hills are the dramatic setting for this brand-new, sustainably built contemporary villa in the exclusive resort community of Monte Mayor. The sleek, multi-level structure is oriented to take in the views of the Andalusian coastline, the Mediterranean Sea, and, on a clear day, Gibraltar and the northern coast of Morocco. Surrounding the home are idyllic gardens bounded by a UNESCO World Heritage Green Belt zone. Marbella’s world-class golf courses and the glitz and glamor of Puerto Banús are just 15 minutes away.  (Discover this Andalusian Coast Villa Here
